Verrutop

  • What is it?

Verrutop is an innovative product for the treatment of warts and verrucas.

It is a Class 2A medical device that can only be administered by qualified healthcare professionals.

Verrucas and warts are typically challenging to treat: there is no one treatment that works for everyone and results can be unpredictable.

This new formulation is a powerful mixture of nitric acid, organic acids, and zinc and copper salts. The application is normally quick and painless. There is no need for dressings and normal activities will not be impeded.

  • How it works

Unlike cryotherapy or other chemical treatments, Verrutop does not act by freezing or burning the tissue. Instead, it deteriorates the viral protein and dries out the wart tissue, which then falls off the skin, leaving intact skin underneath.

Paring back of the verruca is performed during the treatment to aid the product’s absorption.

Verrutop is then applied to the verruca. The application is quick and normally painless, although some patients may experience a slight short-lived tingling.

  • Is it Effective?

It is recommended that surgical spirit is applied to the area twice a day as this helps to dry out the lesion. It is also advised to avoid long soaks in the bath/shower for the same reason.

A review treatment is recommended after 2 weeks to assess and reapply. The process is repeated every 2 weeks to a maximum of 6 sessions.

The manufacturer states that 80% of patients saw clearance within 4 applications. In 50% of patients remission was seen after 3 treatments.

  • Is it right for me?

Whilst Verrutop is a safe topical treatment, it should not be used:

On healthy skin, tumours, keloids or flat warts.

For children under the age of 6

    On pregnant or breastfeeding women

On patients with impaired circulation or sensation

On patients using other topical treatments or are undergoing other skin treatments e.g., for cancer.
